Lithium Oasis
Developing lithium from the Salton Sea in California can help anchor a multi-billion dollar domestic electric vehicle battery supply chain and inject thousands of jobs and billions of dollars into California’s Imperial Valley, one of the state’s most economically disadvantaged regions. That’s the finding of our new report, Building Lithium Valley: Opportunities and Challenges Ahead for Developing California’s Battery Manufacturing Ecosystem.
Gov. Gavin Newsomsigned a bill on 29 September 2020 to create a Blue Ribbon Commission on lithium extraction in California, while also committing the state to 100% zero emission vehicle sales by 2035 – demonstrating the state is serious about reaping the economic benefits from clean transportation by anchoring a domestic supply chain for EV battery manufacturing in California and the U.S. Experts say lithium – the base mineral for EV battery production – from California’s Salton Sea can supply more than one-third of the world’s lithium demand, which is set to soar in years to come.
