New York, 8 June 2020 — The Clean Fight New York is proud to launch its clean energy business accelerator designed to attract growth-stage startups to scale business in New York State. Supported by New Energy Nexus and The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), this accelerator is open to companies from across the United States and around the world who are aggressively advancing ways to meet carbon reduction mandates, while boosting economic opportunity and job creation for all.
With buildings responsible for almost two-thirds of New York City’s greenhouse gas emissions, The Clean Fight’s 2020 inaugural cohort will focus on high-impact solutions that will help decarbonize building stock, at speed. With a laser focus on equipping growth-stage clean energy and bringing energy efficiency startups to New York State to forge partnerships at scale, this program provides technical support, corporate introductions and relationship-building, and the ability to apply for up to half a million in grants to fund resulting partnership agreements.
“New Energy Nexus is proud to power The Clean Fight. This is the decisive decade for our planet and a critical time for our country to heal. Ten years where we can and must build an abundant world with access to clean energy and its health, jobs and savings for 100% of the population. It will take the bold approach and thinking of programs like The Clean Fight to achieve this,” said Danny Kennedy, CEO, New Energy Nexus.
The Clean Fight looks to support solutions that not only meaningfully impact greenhouse gas emissions, but that will create high quality jobs and economic opportunity. Those staffed by or serving communities that are under-served or under-represented are highly encouraged to join The Clean Fight. In addition, The Clean Fight provides access to the full breadth of the demand-side customer base, from market-creating multi-nationals to smaller businesses looking for guidance on cleaner solutions, which will help enable New York’s climate goals to be achieved. In light of the implications for buildings and the communities they serve as a result of COVID-19, The Clean Fight is also looking for clean building solutions with additional health and wellness benefits that will enable tenants to safely and confidently work and live.
Alicia Barton, President and CEO, New York State Energy Research Development Authority, said, “As New York State looks to build back better after the COVID pandemic, our nation-leading climate agenda will help foster innovative solutions and technologies that will accelerate our economic recovery. As part of this effort, The Clean Fight accelerator signals to entrepreneurs and start-up companies that New York State is open for business and putting its support behind the solutions and technologies that can ensure all New Yorkers have access to a healthier building stock and cleaner communities.”
New York State’s ambitious climate and clean energy agenda was formalized under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, which sets the state on a path to economy-wide carbon neutrality by mandating an 85 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and 100 percent clean electric grid by 2040.
“The Clean Fight has big ambitions. We want to ensure that the most promising growth-stage companies from around the world can realize their potential in New York. But, beyond that, we want to catalyze a broader conversation and action in the business community on how to decarbonize New York State while driving equity into the sector,” said Kate Frucher, Managing Director, The Clean Fight.
